The Part Most Defender Owners Overlook
Everyone talks about drive belts and primary clutch kits, but the helix inside your Can-Am Defender's secondary (driven) clutch does just as much to determine how your machine performs. The helix is the ramped component the rollers ride against as the secondary clutch opens and closes. Those ramp angles control your upshift and backshift behavior, which is to say they control how your Defender pulls, holds engine RPM under load, and shifts back down when you hit a hill or a mud hole.
How the Damage Happens
The secondary clutch uses small rollers that press against the helix ramps thousands of times on every ride. Over time and miles, those rollers wear, flat-spot, or seize. Once a roller stops spinning freely, it stops rolling across the ramp and starts dragging and gouging instead. That dragging carves grooves into the helix surface.
A gouged helix no longer presents a clean, consistent ramp to the rollers. The result is unpredictable shifting, a clutch that feels rough or hangs up, accelerated belt wear, and lost performance under load. On a heavily used Defender HD8 or HD10 that spends its life towing, plowing, or working through mud and hills, this kind of wear is common and often goes unnoticed until the symptoms get bad.
Signs Your Helix May Be Worn
Watch for inconsistent or rough shifting, a Defender that struggles to hold RPM when it should be backshifting on a climb, unusual noise from the secondary clutch, or belt wear that returns quickly even after you have installed a fresh belt. Any of these is a good reason to pull the secondary apart and inspect both the rollers and the helix ramps for grooving and flat spots.
