Ask a Can-Am Defender owner how their belt died and you rarely hear about a high-speed run. You hear about backing a loaded trailer up a hill, creeping through a gate with a full bed, or pushing snow at walking speed. That is not a coincidence. A CVT belt is under the most stress at the lowest speeds, and a Defender lives there.
Why Slow Work Is Hard on a Belt
A CVT does not have a clutch pack or a torque converter to absorb the difference between engine speed and wheel speed. The belt itself is the coupling. When you are barely moving but asking for a lot of torque, the primary has not shifted out, the belt is riding deep in the primary sheaves on a small effective diameter, and the only thing keeping it from slipping is sheave clamping force.
Any slip at that point turns into heat, and heat is what kills belts. The rubber compound softens, the cords lose tension, the edges glaze, and the belt starts to lose the very grip it needs. Once that cycle starts it accelerates — a slightly slipping belt runs hotter, and a hotter belt slips more.
The Symptoms Owners Describe
- A burnt rubber smell after loading or towing, especially on a grade
- Engine RPM climbing without a matching increase in ground speed
- Shiny, glazed belt sides instead of a dull matte finish
- Chunks missing from the cogs, or frayed cords along one edge
- Vibration or shudder as the machine takes off from a stop
If you see glazing on a belt with low hours, it is not a defect — it is a record of how the machine gets used.
Belt Construction Actually Matters Here
Belts are not interchangeable commodities. The cord material, the cover fabric, and the rubber compound decide how much heat the belt can take before it gives up, and how much load it can transmit before it starts slipping in the first place. A belt built for higher strength holds its clamping grip longer under sustained low-speed load, which means less slip, which means less heat — the whole cycle running in the right direction instead of the wrong one.

Habits That Stretch Belt Life
Even the best belt appreciates good technique. A few things that make a real difference on a work Defender:
- Use low range. High range at creeping speed with a load is the single most common belt killer. Low range lets the primary engage properly and gets the belt out of the deep-slip zone.
- Do not ride the throttle at partial engagement. Feathering the pedal to inch forward keeps the belt in a half-slipping state. Either get into low range or commit to the throttle.
- Let it cool. After heavy pulling, a few minutes of light driving moves air through the clutch housing and pulls heat out of the belt.
- Keep the clutch housing clean. Packed belt dust and mud insulate the belt and block airflow.
- Carry a spare. A belt is a wear item, and a Defender that is stranded in a field is worth a lot less than one with a spare belt behind the seat.
Replace It Before It Strands You
Belts rarely fail without warning. Glazing, a dropping width measurement, and a burnt smell after hard work are all telling you the same thing. Change the belt on your schedule, in the shop, rather than on the machine's schedule, at the far end of the property, with a load on the trailer.
