The Clutch Half Everybody Ignores
Owners obsess over the primary clutch—weights, springs, engagement RPM—and forget the secondary (driven) clutch does just as much work. On a Polaris RZR 1000, the secondary is what controls backshift, holds belt tension, and keeps the belt squeezed as load changes. When it wears out, the symptoms are easy to blame on other things: belts that wear too fast, a lazy or notchy backshift, a belt that feels loose, or a faint wobble you can feel through the machine at cruising speed.
What Actually Wears Out Back There
Two things kill a high-mileage secondary. First, the rollers and their pins wear—the secondary rides on rollers that follow the helix, and once they flat-spot or the pins groove, backshift gets notchy and inconsistent. Second, and more serious, the aluminum sheave faces themselves get worn and grooved from years of belt contact and heat. A grooved, cupped, or wobbling sheave will never hold a belt properly again no matter what belt you bolt in—it'll just keep chewing them up.
Rebuild or Replace?
If the sheaves are still flat and true, fresh rollers can bring a secondary back. But once the sheave surfaces are worn, the bore is sloppy, or you've got measurable wobble, you're throwing good money after bad rebuilding a worn-out core. At that point a complete, known-good secondary is the smarter buy—you get fresh, true sheaves and reset the whole driven side in one shot.

Do It Once, Do It Right
If you've replaced belt after belt and they keep coming out worn or glazed, stop blaming the belt and inspect the secondary sheaves. A worn driven clutch is one of the most overlooked causes of short belt life and sluggish backshift on these machines. Swapping in a complete, true secondary resets the whole driven side and lets your belt—and your backshift—work the way they should.
