The Step Most People Improvise
Every primary clutch service ends the same way: the retaining bolt has to go back in and it has to come up to the torque value in the service manual. The problem is obvious the moment you put a wrench on it. The clutch spins with the crank. There is nothing holding it, so the whole assembly just turns instead of the bolt tightening.
What happens next in a lot of garages is improvisation. A screwdriver jammed between the sheaves. A pry bar wedged against the frame. An impact gun used to spin the bolt in and hope it lands somewhere near spec. All three of those cause problems that show up later.
Why the Shortcuts Cost You
Sheave faces are the working surface
The belt drives by wedging into those two machined faces. Any gouge, burr, or dent you put in a sheave becomes a place the belt gets chewed. Prying against the sheaves with a screwdriver to keep the clutch from turning is putting a hard steel edge against the exact surface that has to stay smooth for the belt to live.
Impact guns do not equal torque
Running a clutch bolt in with an impact tells you nothing about clamp load. Too loose and the clutch can work itself on the taper, wallow the bore, and in the worst case damage the crank end. Too tight and you are stretching the bolt and making the next removal a fight. Neither is a place you want to guess.
Prying against the frame or engine
Anything you wedge between the clutch and the chassis is applying side load to a shaft that was never designed to take it, and it usually slips at exactly the wrong moment.
Hold It Properly Instead

A Clean Clutch Bolt Procedure
- Get the machine safely supported and the CVT cover off, with the belt removed.
- Clean the bolt threads and the crank taper. Debris and old thread locker change how the fastener loads.
- Set the holder tool on the primary clutch so the clutch cannot rotate.
- Bring the bolt to the torque value in your Kawasaki service manual with a click or dial torque wrench. Do not substitute an impact gun for this step.
- Remove the tool, reinstall the belt, verify the deflection or belt setup per the manual, and close it up.
Do It Once
Clutch work on a KRX 1000 or a Ridge is not difficult, but it is unforgiving of guesswork. A bolt that is not to spec and a set of sheaves with pry marks in them will both come back later as belt problems, and belt problems on a UTV always seem to happen the farthest point from the truck. Holding the clutch correctly is the cheapest insurance in the whole job.
