Every clutch job eventually reaches the same fork in the road. You want to change a helix, swap a secondary spring, replace a set of rollers, or get a primary apart to clean the sheaves — and the only thing standing between you and the parts is a coil spring that is already compressed before you pick up a wrench.
The Spring Does Not Relax When You Pull the Clutch Off the Shaft
This is the part that catches people. A CVT secondary is assembled with preload built in. The spring is wound and compressed at the factory, and the cover bolts are what hold it there. Pulling the clutch off the jackshaft does nothing to release that energy. Set it on the bench and it is still loaded. Put it in a vise and it is still loaded.
Depending on the model and spring rate, you can be sitting on well over a hundred pounds of stored force, plus the twist the spring carries because a secondary spring is preloaded in rotation as well as compression. That rotational preload is why a secondary that comes apart unevenly does not just pop — it launches and spins at the same time.
What Failure Actually Looks Like
The classic backyard method is to clamp the clutch, back the bolts out in a criss-cross, and hope the cover walks off evenly. It usually does, right up until it does not. One bolt gets a thread or two ahead of the others, the cover cocks in the bore, the last fastener strips or snaps under side load, and the cover, the spring, and the helix all leave the bench at once. Best case you buy a new helix. Worst case you catch a machined aluminum part with your face.
The Right Tool Is Boring, and That Is the Point

Two details matter more than they sound like they do. First, it uses an ACME screw rather than a piece of all-thread. ACME threading is designed for load-carrying motion, so it turns smoothly under pressure instead of galling and binding the way cheap threaded rod does when you are trying to ease a spring down. Second, the handle is CNC machined from one piece of steel — no welded joint to become the weak link at exactly the wrong moment. The body is powder coated and the whole thing is made in the USA.
Fitment
It is compatible with Polaris (all models), Can-Am (all models), and select Yamahas. It does not work on the Yamaha RMAX, X2, or X4 — those use a different compressor, and we list that one separately, so check before you order if that is your machine.
What It Opens Up on Your Bench
Once you can safely take a secondary apart, a whole tier of clutch tuning stops being dealer-only work. Helix angle changes to control backshift. Secondary spring changes to adjust how hard the clutch squeezes the belt. Roller and bushing replacement on a high-hour machine. Cleaning glazed sheaves properly instead of trying to reach them with the clutch assembled. On the primary side, the same tool gets you in for spring and weight changes and a real sheave cleaning.
None of that is difficult work. It is just work that requires the spring to be under control the entire time. Eighty-nine dollars is cheaper than one broken helix, and considerably cheaper than the alternative.
