Swapping a Primary Clutch Spring? Stop Fighting That Spring by Hand

The Most Underrated Danger in Your Garage

If you tune your own CVT clutches, sooner or later you have to open up the primary. Whether you're installing a new spring, changing flyweights, or freshening a high-hour clutch, the cover bolts are holding back a spring that's under serious preload. That spring doesn't care how careful you are. Take the bolts out unevenly, or let a screwdriver slip while you pry, and the cover can rocket off the clutch with weights and hardware right behind it. Cracked covers, bent spider arms, lost parts, and mashed fingers are all common results of trying to muscle a primary apart on the bench.

The frustrating part is that this is completely avoidable. A primary clutch is designed to come apart in a controlled, straight line as long as you keep even pressure on the cover while you back the bolts out. The problem is doing that by hand.

What a Spring Compressor Actually Does

The Hunterworks Clutch Spring Compressor Tool holds the clutch cover down and captures the spring load so you can remove and reinstall the cover bolts with the pressure taken off them. Instead of chasing bolts that are trying to walk out under load, you compress the assembly first, back the fasteners out evenly, then release the tension slowly and in a straight line. Reassembly works the same way in reverse, which means your bolts thread in clean and your cover seats flat instead of cocked to one side.

That controlled compression is what protects the expensive parts. Spider arms, buttons, the cover itself, and your spring all live longer when they aren't being pried, hammered, or forced. And because the tool keeps everything aligned, you get a repeatable result every time you go in to adjust.

Fitment Across the Brands You Ride

One of the best things about this tool is how many machines it covers. It's compatible with Polaris (all models) and Can-Am (all models), plus select Yamaha models. Note that it does not work on the Yamaha RMAX, X2, or X4 clutches, so if you run one of those, this isn't the tool for that primary. For the vast majority of Polaris RZR, Ranger, General, and Sportsman owners, and for Can-Am Maverick, Defender, Commander, Outlander, and Renegade riders, it's a single tool that handles your whole stable.

Who Needs One

If you're the person who does your own clutch work, this belongs on your bench. Anyone running an adjustable clutch kit will be in and out of the primary as they dial in engagement and shift for tires, elevation, or a new tune. Doing that repeatedly by hand is how good parts get ruined. A dedicated compressor turns a nerve-racking job into a five-minute one and pays for itself the first time it saves a cover or a set of weights.

Tuning your clutch is one of the highest-value upgrades you can make to how your machine drives. Do it safely and do it right with the Hunterworks Clutch Spring Compressor Tool, and you'll never dread pulling that cover again.
