The first time you crack open a CVT clutch, the amount of energy packed into that spring is a rude surprise. A primary clutch spring can be holding well over a hundred pounds of preload, and a secondary is often worse because it stores both compression and twist. Try to separate the clutch halves with a bench vise, a pry bar, or an impact and a prayer, and one of two things happens: parts launch across your shop, or your fingers end up where the sheave just was.
