The Can-Am Commander 1000 is a genuinely versatile side-by-side, equally at home towing around the property and covering ground on the trail. Like every CVT machine, though, it lives and dies by its drive belt. When that belt starts to give up, the Commander tells you well before it strands you, if you know what to listen and smell for.
What Slipping and Burning Actually Mean
The classic tell is engine RPM that climbs while ground speed does not follow. You roll into the throttle, the tach jumps, and the machine feels like it is revving past the work it is doing. Pair that with a hot, burnt-rubber smell drifting up from the clutch cover and you have a belt that is slipping against the sheaves instead of gripping them. Left alone, that slip glazes the belt surface hard and shiny, which makes it grip even less, and the problem snowballs until the belt lets go, often at the worst possible moment under load.
Why Belts Give Up Early
Heat is the enemy. Lugging the Commander at low RPM in high range, aggressive throttle from a dead stop, heavy towing, deep mud, and long slow crawls all build heat in the CVT faster than it can shed it. Oversized tires make it worse by asking the belt to move more load at each engagement. None of that is unusual for how these machines get used, which is exactly why the belt is a wear item you should treat as consumable and keep an eye on.

When it is time to replace, a belt built with more headroom than stock pays off. Habits That Make Any Belt Last
A better belt is only half the equation. Let the CVT warm up for a minute before you hammer it, especially in cold weather when a cold belt is stiff and prone to slip. Use low range for towing, mud, and slow technical work instead of lugging high range. Keep the clutches and belt surfaces clean and dry, and let the system cool between hard pulls rather than stacking heat. Those habits stretch the life of whatever belt you run.
Keep a Spare Under the Seat
Even a strong belt is a wear part, and the Commander is the kind of machine you take places where a walk back is a long one. Carrying a spare belt and the basic tools to swap it turns a trail-ending failure into a fifteen-minute delay. Start with a belt that resists slip and heat, ride it smart, and keep a backup close, and your Commander 1000 will spend a lot more time working and a lot less time cooking rubber.
