Rebuilt Your Primary and Skipped the Needle Bearing? That's the One Part That Kills Crankshafts

The Part Nobody Inspects Until It's Too Late

Most clutch service stops at the visible stuff. New belt, clean the sheaves, maybe fresh weights and a spring, bolt it back together. What almost never gets touched is the needle bearing that lets the primary clutch spin on its shaft, and that bearing is the one component in the whole assembly that can take your crankshaft with it when it fails.

That bearing lives in a sealed, unventilated aluminum box that routinely runs well over 200 degrees under load. Ordinary grease does not stay grease in that environment. It cooks, thins out, migrates away from the rollers, then hardens into a varnish that no longer lubricates anything. From there the rollers start scuffing the shaft, and the damage accelerates.

Symptoms of a Bearing That's Going Away

  • A squeal or chirp at idle that changes or disappears when engagement occurs.
  • Clunky, jerky low-RPM takeoff, often more noticeable in high range where the machine is loading the driveline at lower engine speed.
  • Heat discoloration on the shaft or the thrust washers when you pull the clutch. Blued or straw-colored metal means it was running hot and dry.
  • Washers that are worn thin, cracked, or crumbling when the clutch comes off.
  • Roughness or notchiness when you spin the clutch by hand off the machine.

Any one of those means the bearing has already been running unlubricated for a while. If the shaft is scored, you are no longer doing a clutch service.

Not All Grease Belongs in a Clutch

This is where a lot of otherwise careful work goes wrong. General purpose chassis grease and extreme pressure wheel bearing grease are both wrong for this application. EP additives and the wrong thickeners break down under sustained clutch-housing heat and leave you worse off than a dry bearing would.

What you want is a synthetic formulated for exactly this job, with a thickener that stays put, repels water, and protects the shaft from corrosion between rides. The Hunterworks Primary Bearing Needle Bearing Grease is built for primary clutch needle bearings on Polaris and Can-Am machines. It comes as 1oz (30cc) in a syringe with a locking cap, which makes it easy to place grease precisely into the bearing instead of packing the whole cavity. One tube goes a very long way.

The One-Way Bearing Distinction

Pay attention here, because this trips people up. On Can-Am machines, do not put needle bearing grease in the one-way bearing. Can-Am one-way bearings need a dedicated one-way grease, and using the wrong product there can cause the sprag to slip or grab. On Polaris machines the one-way is a needle bearing itself, so needle bearing grease is appropriate.

If you take away one thing: know which bearing you are looking at before the syringe comes out.

How Much to Use

More is not better. The rollers need a film, not a packed cavity. Over-greasing creates drag, throws excess grease onto surfaces where it does not belong, and in the worst case gets slung toward the sheave faces, which is the last place on the machine you want lubricant. A dab worked into the rollers is the goal.

Fold It Into Your Normal Service

The best time to address this is any time the primary is already off, which for most riders means during a belt change interval or a weight and spring swap. Pull the clutch, inspect the shaft and washers, check the bearing for roughness, and re-grease it while everything is apart. It adds a few minutes to a job you were already doing and it is the cheapest insurance in the clutch.

Machines that see mud, water, or long hours at working RPM should get this looked at more often, since heat and contamination are the two things that shorten bearing life the most.
