Rebuilding a Can-Am Primary Clutch? The One-Way Bearing Needs Its Own Grease, Not Whatever's on the Bench

You have the primary off, the cover is on the bench, and everything looks clean. There's a tube of general-purpose grease in the drawer. This is the moment where a lot of otherwise-good Can-Am clutch work goes sideways, because the bearing you're about to pack is not a normal bearing and it does not want normal grease.

What a one-way bearing actually does

Many Can-Am primary clutches use a one-way (sprag or roller-ramp style) bearing rather than a plain needle bearing. Instead of just letting a shaft spin freely, it locks in one direction and freewheels in the other. That locking action depends on tiny sprags or rollers wedging against a ramp at exactly the right moment, thousands of times a ride, under load, at clutch temperatures.

That is a very different job from what a needle bearing does. A needle bearing wants a grease that stays put and carries load under rolling contact. A one-way bearing needs a lubricant thin enough and consistent enough that the elements can still engage and release cleanly — and it has to keep doing that when the clutch is hot.

Where the wrong grease shows up

Heavy chassis grease, moly paste, or anything too thick can hydraulically cushion the sprags so they hesitate before locking. What you feel is a clutch that grabs late or inconsistently on engagement, sometimes with a chirp or slip on takeoff. Grease that's too thin or not thermally stable does the opposite — it thins out, migrates, and leaves the bearing dry after a few heat cycles. Either way the bearing wears fast, and when a one-way bearing lets go it usually takes the surrounding parts with it.

Use the grease the clutch was designed around

Can-Am specifies a Kluber Isoflex-type lubricant for this bearing for exactly these reasons. One clutch, two different bearings

This is the part that trips people up: the same clutch family can contain both bearing types, and they do not share a lubricant. One-way bearings get the Klubers-alternative grease. Service habits that make bearings last

  • Inspect the bearing any time the primary is apart — you're already there, and a one-way bearing that's starting to gall is much cheaper to catch than to replace after failure.
  • Clean the old grease out completely rather than adding fresh on top of contaminated product. Belt dust is abrasive.
  • Don't overpack. More grease is not more protection in a bearing that has to engage and release.
  • Re-grease as part of routine clutch service, not only when something sounds wrong.

A Can-Am primary clutch is a precision assembly held together by a handful of small decisions. Which grease goes in the one-way bearing is one of the cheapest of those decisions to get right, and one of the most expensive to get wrong.
