Most belts do not fail without notice. They tell you for weeks first, in ways that are easy to see if you pull the cover and know what you are looking at. Ten minutes with a caliper and a flashlight will tell you more about a CF Moto ZForce clutch box than any amount of guessing at mileage.
1. Measure the width, do not eyeball it
Width is the only inspection that gives you a number instead of an opinion. A CVT belt does its work on the two side faces, and as those faces wear, the belt sits deeper into both clutches. Deeper means the gearing changes, engagement gets later, and top-end shift-out suffers. Measure the top width with a caliper in three or four spots around the belt and write it down. Compare against the width of a new belt of the same part number.
The other thing that measurement tells you: if the belt is noticeably narrower in one section than another, it has been slipping in one spot. That is a clutching or riding-style problem, not a belt-quality problem, and a new belt will do the same thing if you do not address it.
2. Look at the cogs, not just the surface
Flip the belt over and flex it. Small cracks at the base of the cogs mean the belt has been heat-cycled hard. One or two hairline cracks on an older belt are normal wear. Cracks that run deep, or cogs starting to lift at the edges, mean the belt is on borrowed time and it will let go on the trail rather than in your shop.
3. Check the edges for cord
Any place you can see fiber cord poking out of the edge of the belt, the belt is finished. Frayed cord along one edge in particular usually points at alignment: the belt is being pushed against a sheave face it should not be touching. 4. Feel for glazing
Run a thumb across the side faces. A healthy belt face has a slightly dull, grippy texture. A glazed belt feels slick and looks shiny, and it usually smells like hot rubber. Glazing is slip — the belt has been spinning against the sheaves instead of gripping them. That comes from loading the machine hard at low speed, water in the clutches, or oily sheave faces. Clean sheaves with brake cleaner and a scuff pad while the belt is out; a new belt on dirty sheaves will glaze itself in short order.

While the cover is off
Do the rest of the job properly. Clean both sheave faces, blow the belt dust out of the housing, check that the clutch cover seal is intact so you are not pulling grit in, and give the new belt an easy first few miles rather than a hard pull straight out of the box. A belt that is seated and cured under light load lasts noticeably longer than one that gets abused on mile one.
And keep the old belt if it still measures close to spec. A belt that is worn but intact is a fine trail spare — strapped to the machine, not sitting on the shelf in the garage.
