Here is a complaint we hear constantly on utility machines: the side-by-side runs fine, idles fine, pulls fine off the line, but it just will not do what it used to on a long straight stretch. Nothing broke. Nothing smells hot. It is simply a few miles per hour slower than it was a couple hundred hours ago, and the owner has quietly gotten used to it.
Nine times out of ten on a Polaris Ranger 570, that machine is running a belt that is worn narrow.
Width Is Ratio
A CVT has no fixed gears. Your ratio at any moment is set by where the belt is riding in the primary versus the secondary — how far out on the primary sheaves and how deep in the secondary. A new belt has a specific width, and that width is what positions it in those V-shaped sheaves.
As a belt wears, it does not get thinner from the top down so much as it gets narrower. The cord and rubber on the sidewalls give up material against the sheave faces. A narrower belt sinks lower into the primary at any given clutch position, which means at wide open throttle the clutch shifts out but the belt never climbs as far up the sheaves as it did new. You end up with a numerically lower overdrive ratio. The engine still makes the same power and still hits the same RPM — the machine just is not geared as tall anymore.
The Symptom Pattern
The giveaway is that the loss is on top speed only. Engagement still feels normal. Low-speed pulling still feels normal. If anything, low-end grunt can feel slightly better, because you are effectively geared shorter. That combination is why so many riders never suspect the belt — a bad belt is supposed to slip, smell, and strand you, not just leave a couple miles per hour on the table.
Measure It, Do Not Eyeball It
Pull the clutch cover and get a caliper on the belt at several points around its circumference. Compare that measurement to the width of a new belt. If you are down measurably from new, you are already losing ratio, and belts do not wear evenly — measure in three or four places and look at the spread as well as the number. Uneven width around the loop points at a clutch or alignment issue rather than plain mileage.
While the cover is off, run a fingernail down each sidewall. Cord showing, a hard glazed shine, cracked cogs, or a belt that has taken a set and will not lay round on the bench all say the same thing the caliper does.

A new belt into dirty sheaves is money half spent. Before the new belt goes on, clean both the primary and secondary sheave faces down to clean metal with a scuff pad and brake cleaner — glaze and belt dust left on the sheaves will start polishing the new belt immediately. Blow the belt dust out of the clutch housing while you are in there, and check that the intake and exhaust ducting for the clutch cover is clear and connected, since a 570 working at low speed relies on that airflow.
Then give the new belt an easy first few miles. Varied throttle, no towing, no wide open pulls. It takes very little time and it is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy on a belt.
