The Symptom: Engine Revs, Machine Stops Pulling
You cross a hole, come up the far bank, and the engine climbs RPM while the tires barely turn. A few seconds later drive comes back, or it doesn't. Riders almost always blame the belt for this, and almost always the belt is the victim rather than the cause.
What happened is water got into the CVT housing. A CVT belt does not transmit power by wrapping around a pulley the way a chain grabs a sprocket. It transmits power entirely through friction between the belt sidewalls and the sheave faces. Introduce a film of water between those two surfaces and the coefficient of friction collapses. The primary keeps squeezing, the belt keeps sitting in the sheave, and it simply slides.
Why a Wet Slip Costs You a Belt
A slipping belt is a belt being sanded. In the seconds it takes to spin up inside the sheaves, the belt sidewall is dragging against spinning aluminum at a huge speed differential, and the heat generated is enormous. That heat glazes the sidewall cords and can cook the rubber compound even though the outside of the belt looks perfectly fine.
This is why so many riders report a belt that "broke for no reason" three rides after a water crossing. The failure was scheduled the day it slipped. The cords were already damaged, and the belt simply ran out of margin later, usually under load on a hill or coming out of a hole.
What to Check Before You Blame the Belt
- The outer CVT cover seal. The rubber seal has to sit flat in its groove the whole way around. A seal that is twisted, pinched, or has popped out in one spot will let water in every crossing.
- The inner cover. Inner covers warp over time, and a warped inner cover leaks even with a perfect outer seal.
- The drain plug and intake ducting. If the CVT intake or exhaust duct has been damaged, rerouted, or left disconnected, you are feeding the housing water and grit directly.
- Duct routing after a lift or big tires. A lot of water-ingestion problems show up right after a build, because a duct got moved or crushed during the install.
If You Do Take On Water
Pull the cover, drain it, and dry the sheave faces and the belt before you keep riding. Do not try to "burn it dry" by holding throttle in gear. That is exactly the slipping condition that destroys belts. Wipe the sheaves down, let everything dry, then reassemble with the seal seated correctly.
Belt Construction Matters When Conditions Get Ugly
No belt is immune to a soaked clutch housing, but belt construction absolutely determines how much abuse a belt survives before it lets go. Cord strength, the rubber compound, and how the sidewalls are built decide whether a belt that took a slipping event limps on or strands you two miles from the truck.

The Practical Takeaway
If your Outlander or Renegade suddenly lost drive in the water, do not just throw a belt at it. Find the leak first, because a new belt in a housing that still takes on water is a belt on borrowed time. Fix the seal, verify the ducting, dry the sheaves properly after every deep crossing, and carry a spare belt on rides where water is part of the plan.
Riders who mud and water crossing regularly should treat the belt as a consumable and inspect it after every serious swim. It costs nothing to look, and a glazed sidewall spotted in the garage beats one discovered on the trail.
