The Belt Is Slipping Long Before You Hear It
A CVT belt does not have teeth. Everything it does, it does through friction against the sheave faces, and it only gets that friction when the primary clutch has squeezed down hard enough to grip it. At full engagement and a decent road speed, grip is not the problem. At three miles an hour with a blade loaded up or a trailer of firewood behind you, the primary is barely off engagement, the belt is riding low and narrow in the primary, and the contact patch is small.
That is the moment a belt gets hurt. Not on the fast section. On the slow pull.
What Low Range Actually Buys You
Riders think of low range as "more power," and it does multiply torque, but the part that matters for belt life is engine speed. In low range the engine turns faster to make the same ground speed. Faster engine speed means the primary is further into its shift and clamping harder, and it means the fan vanes cast into the clutch are actually moving air through the housing.
Do the same job in high range and you are asking a barely-engaged clutch to hold a heavy load while nothing is circulating air. The belt slips a little, glazes, gets hot, glazes more, and slips more. It is a loop that only goes one direction.
How to Read a Belt That Has Been Worked Slow
Pull the cover and look at the sides of the belt. A belt that has been slipping at low speed comes out shiny and hard on the flanks instead of showing normal dull cord and rubber. Run your thumbnail across it. If it feels like plastic and will not mark, that belt is glazed and it will keep slipping no matter how new the rest of the machine is. You will often smell it before you see it.
Also check the sheave faces themselves. A belt that has been cooking leaves a black film on the aluminum, and that film keeps a new belt from gripping either. Clean the faces with a scuff pad and brake cleaner before the new belt goes in.

The Habit That Saves the Next One
Pick low range any time you are moving weight slowly. Plowing, dragging a food plot implement, creeping through timber, pulling a loaded trailer up a grade, winching yourself out of something. If you are under about twenty miles an hour and under load, low range is where the machine wants to be. Above that, get back into high before low range starts adding its own heat.
