When the Secondary Is the Problem, Not the Primary

Most clutch complaints get blamed on the primary, but on a Can-Am the three-roller secondary clutch quietly controls how smoothly your machine engages and how crisply it backshifts. When those little composite rollers wear out, the whole driveline feels off — and no amount of primary tuning fully fixes it.

The rollers ride against the helix and translate belt load into the squeeze that holds and shifts the secondary sheave. They live in one of the hottest, hardest-working parts of the CVT, and on a well-used machine they wear down, wear unevenly, or develop flat spots over time.

The Symptoms of Worn Secondary Rollers

Jerky, Inconsistent Engagement

Slightly worn rollers make engagement jerkier and less predictable, especially if they are not wearing evenly. You feel it as a machine that grabs and lets go instead of taking up smoothly from a stop.

Harsh Backshift and Uneven Belt Wear

As rollers wear, the moveable sheave can bind or move inconsistently, which shows up as a harsh, abrupt backshift when you lift off or start down a hill. That same inconsistency chews belts unevenly — a classic tell is finding that only some rollers show contact wear while others look barely touched, meaning the sheave is not squeezing evenly across the belt.
