How to Service Your Polaris RZR Primary Clutch (and the Tools You Need)

Your Primary Clutch Needs Service Too

Most Polaris RZR and General owners think about clutch maintenance only when they replace a belt. But the primary clutch itself collects belt dust, debris, and grime over time, and its internal parts wear. A dirty or neglected primary can cause sluggish shifting, inconsistent engagement, and premature belt wear. Periodically taking the clutch apart to clean it, inspect the sheaves, and check the weights and bushings is one of the best things you can do to keep your machine shifting crisply.

The good news: this is a job you can absolutely do in your own garage. You just need to be able to safely disassemble and reassemble the clutch, and that comes down to having the correct tools.

Why You Need the Right Tools

The primary clutch is spring-loaded and torqued to spec, so you cannot simply pry it apart. To service it properly you need to hold the clutch securely while you break loose and re-torque the fasteners, and you need to remove the spider (the center component the weights mount to) without damaging anything. Improvising with a bench vise and hand tools is how people gouge sheaves, round off fasteners, and get hurt.

The Polaris 900/1000 Primary Tool Package gives you exactly what the job requires: a clutch holder, a spider tool, and a spider nut tool. Together these let you lock the clutch down, break the spider loose, and reassemble everything to the correct torque safely and repeatably.

What It Fits

This tool package is designed to take the clutch apart for repair and service. It fits Polaris RZR 900 and 1000 of any year and any model, Polaris General and General XP of any year, the 2016 Ranger 900, the 2017 Ranger 1000, and the 2016-2018 ACE 900. If you own one of these machines, one tool package covers you for clutch service for as long as you keep the vehicle. An optional clutch puller is available as well if you also need to pull the primary off the crankshaft.

The Basic Service Process

With the tools in hand, servicing a primary follows a repeatable routine. Secure the clutch in the holder, remove the spider nut and spider using the spider tools, then separate the sheaves. From there you can blow out and wipe down all the belt dust, inspect the sheave faces for scoring, check the flyweights and bushings for wear, and make sure everything moves freely. Reassemble in reverse, torquing the spider and fasteners to spec, and you have effectively refreshed the heart of your drivetrain.

One important note: this tool package is for taking a clutch apart for repair and service. It is not required simply to install a clutch kit, so if your only goal is a bolt-on kit you may not need it, but for real clutch maintenance it is essential.

Maintain It, Don't Just Replace It

A clean, properly serviced primary clutch shifts better, protects your belt, and lasts longer. Rather than waiting for problems, add clutch service to your maintenance routine. Grab the Polaris 900/1000 Primary Tool Package and you will have everything you need to keep your Polaris clutch in top shape for years.
