Belts Do Not Die of Old Age. They Die of Heat.
Ask ten riders why they went through three belts in a season and you will get ten theories: bad belt, bad clutch, bad luck. The honest answer, almost every time, is temperature. A CVT belt is rubber and aramid cord sandwiched between two steel sheaves that are actively trying to grind heat into it. When that belt is gripping and shifting the way it should, the heat it makes gets carried off by the CVT airflow and the belt lives a long life. When it slips even a little, it makes heat faster than the airflow can remove it, and the compound starts cooking from the inside out.
The tricky part is that the damage is cumulative and invisible. A single hot pull on a long hill can bake hours off a belt that still looks perfectly fine when you pull the cover. Two months later it lets go on the trail and you blame the belt.
What the Numbers Actually Look Like
Belt manufacturers and CVT tuners generally agree on the shape of the curve, even if they argue about exact figures. Under roughly 180°F you are running cool and belts routinely go thousands of miles. Under about 200°F is still considered a healthy operating window. Once you are living in the 210°F-and-up range on a regular basis, heat damage risk climbs sharply and belt life drops off a cliff.
Here is the problem: without a gauge, you have no idea which of those three worlds you live in. Your machine has a coolant temp readout and probably an oil light, but the single component most likely to strand you is completely unmonitored from the driver's seat.
Where the Heat Usually Comes From
- Low-speed, high-load work. Crawling rocks, plowing, or towing in high range keeps the belt in the slip zone where it generates the most heat and gets the least airflow.
- Big tires on stock clutching. Oversized tires raise the load the belt has to move without changing the shift curve that was calibrated for stock rolling weight.
- Blocked or wet CVT intake. A plugged intake duct or a water crossing that left the CVT case damp turns a marginal setup into a belt-burner.
- Worn sheaves and lazy shift. A primary that will not finish its shift holds the belt low in the sheaves at high RPM, which is exactly the condition that makes heat.
Measuring It Instead of Guessing
An infrared belt temperature gauge reads the actual surface temperature of the belt while you ride, which is why it is one of the most useful diagnostic tools you can bolt to a side-by-side. Once you can see belt temperature, clutch tuning stops being guesswork. Try a gear change, a clutch kit, a different driving line, or a duct cleanout, and you get an immediate, measurable answer about whether it helped. Riders who find themselves consistently above 200°F usually discover the fix is a clutch calibration matched to their tire size and elevation, better CVT airflow, or a belt actually engineered for their machine's power level.
The gauge does not make your belt last longer by itself. It tells you which changes do.
