Cracked Clutch Cover on Your Can-Am Maverick X3? Every Ride After That Is Feeding Mud Into the CVT

The Cover Is Doing More Work Than You Think

On a Can-Am Maverick X3, the inner and outer clutch covers are the only thing standing between your primary and secondary clutches and everything the trail throws at them. They seal the CVT so the intake ducting can pull clean air across the belt, and they keep sand, mud, water, and rocks out of the sheaves.

Riders tend to treat a cracked cover as a cosmetic problem to deal with next winter. It is not. The moment that seal is broken, the CVT stops being a controlled environment and starts being a place where abrasive grit collects on the exact surfaces your belt has to grip.

What Happens After the Crack

  • Grit on the sheave faces. Sand between belt and sheave acts like grinding compound. It polishes the sheaves and chews the belt sidewalls at the same time.
  • Accelerated belt wear. A belt that should go a long season starts glazing and shedding rubber in a fraction of that time.
  • Mud packing. Wet clay that finds its way in does not fall back out. It packs behind the moveable sheave and interferes with shift.
  • Lost airflow. A cover that is not sealing lets the CVT intake pull from the wrong place, which kills the cooling you were counting on.
  • Water intrusion. One deep crossing through a broken cover soaks the belt and sheaves, and a wet belt slips hard enough to cook itself.

Why X3 Covers Break in the First Place

The Maverick X3 sits low, moves fast, and puts the clutch area right where rocks kicked up by the front tires end up. Add repeated heat cycling, vibration, and the occasional belt letting go inside the case, and cover cracks are a normal wear item rather than a sign you did something wrong. A belt failure in particular can crack a cover from the inside on the way out.

A Direct Replacement That Does Not Cost OEM Money

The Can Am X3 SuperATV Clutch Cover is a direct bolt-on replacement using the OEM mounting points, so installation is quick with basic hand tools and no modification. It is made from fiberglass-reinforced thermal plastic, which keeps it light while holding up to impact, and it is available as an inner cover, an outer cover, or both together as a kit.

It replaces OEM part numbers 420212605, 420212609, 420450431, and 420450520 on the inner side, and 420212505, 420212508, 420250055, 420441575, 420441820, and 420450405 on the outer.

Fitment

Covers are available for both 64" and 72" Maverick X3 models, spanning the X3 900 and the full Turbo, Turbo R, Turbo RR, DS, RS, X DS, X RS, X MR, X RC, and MAX variants from 2017 through current model years, including Smart-Shox equipped machines. Because Can-Am reshuffled model designations across those years, check the fitment list on the product page against your exact model and year before ordering.

One important exception: this cover is not compatible if your OE inner clutch cover has a temperature gauge hole. If you have a belt temp sensor mounted through the inner cover, this is not the right part for your machine.

While You Have It Off

A cover replacement is a free opportunity to inspect the parts you never otherwise see. Look at the belt sidewalls for glazing or cracking between the cogs. Check the sheave faces for scoring or a polished ring where the belt has been slipping. Blow out any packed debris and make sure the CVT intake duct is clear and dry. Fixing the cover while ignoring a belt that is already damaged just means doing the job twice.
