A Symptom That Gets Blamed on Everything Else
The machine drives fine wide open. The complaint shows up in the transitions. You lift off the throttle heading into a corner and the engine braking arrives a half second late, or it arrives all at once. Roll back into it and the clutch hesitates before it picks the ratio back up. Some days it feels fine, other days it feels like the drivetrain has a hitch in it.
Most people chase this with a belt, then a primary spring, then a set of weights. Meanwhile the actual problem is three parts about the size of a thimble living inside the secondary clutch.
What the Rollers Are Doing
A Can-Am three-roller secondary uses rollers riding against the helix ramps to translate torque into sheave clamping force. As torque load changes, the rollers move along those ramps and the clutch decides how hard to squeeze the belt and how quickly to shift back down. It is a continuous, load-sensitive negotiation happening every second you are driving.
That negotiation depends entirely on the rollers actually rolling. They are small, they carry serious load, and they are living in a housing full of belt dust and heat.
How They Fail
Two ways, usually together. First, the roller develops flat spots where it has been sitting under load or where debris has hammered it. Second, the roller seizes on its pin and starts sliding instead of rolling. Either one turns a smooth ramp action into a stick-slip action, and stick-slip is exactly what you feel as a notchy or delayed backshift.
Pull the secondary apart on a machine with a few hundred hours and it is common to find rollers that are visibly out of round, scored on one face, or that will not spin freely between your fingers. A good roller spins with no drag and shows an even, polished band all the way around.
The Real Obstacle Is the Roll Pins
Here is why so many people never inspect these. The rollers are retained by roll pins, and roll pins are stubborn. The traditional approach is a punch and a hammer, which means you are hammering on an aluminum clutch that has a compressed spring inside it. That is how ears get cracked, how bores get galled, and how a fifteen minute inspection becomes a new secondary clutch.

How Often to Look
Any time the secondary is open for another reason, spin every roller with a finger before you close it back up. It costs nothing. Beyond that, this is worth a dedicated look if you have added weight to the machine, if you run oversize tires that keep the clutch working harder in the low ranges, or if the notchy backshift described above has crept in over a season.
Rollers are inexpensive relative to what they influence. A secondary with three good rollers backshifts cleanly and clamps consistently, which shows up as a belt that lasts longer and a machine that behaves the same way today as it did last month.
