Every Can-Am owner eventually runs into the same problem. You pull the bolt out of the primary clutch, the clutch does not want to come apart, and the temptation to grab a hammer shows up. Do not do it. There is a tool for this, and it costs less than the parts you can break without it.
What the puller does
The Can Am Clutch Puller (New Models), Hunterworks part number HW-064, pulls the back half of the primary clutch off the machine for replacement or maintenance. It replaces OE 529-035-746 and 529-000-064.
One thing to know before you order: it is not required for a clutch kit. If you are just changing weights, springs or a helix, you will be working inside the clutch and may not need it. If you are pulling the clutch off the engine to replace it or service the back half, this is the tool.
Which Can-Am machines it fits
This is the puller for the newer models. The fitment list from the product page is long, so here is how it breaks down:
- Commander: 2022 Commander 700 and 2021-2024 Commander / Max 1000.
- Defender: 2023 HD7, all years of HD8 and HD9, 2016-2026 HD10, and 2026 HD11.
- Maverick: all years Maverick Trail 700, 2018-2021 Maverick Trail 800 and 1000, and 2018-2023 Maverick Sport 1000.
- Maverick X3: 2017-2024, all models.
- Ryker: all years 600 and 900.
- Outlander: 2025 and newer 850 and 1000.
If your machine is an older Commander, Outlander or Renegade, check our Can Am ATV/UTV Clutch Puller instead. The fitment is different, so do not assume.
Why not just hit it
The back half of the primary is seated on a taper on the crank. Hammering on the clutch or the bolt sends shock into the crankshaft and bearings, and you can damage a part that costs far more than the clutch. A puller loads the clutch evenly and pushes it off without that abuse.
While the clutch is off
This is the best time to look at everything the belt touches. Check the primary faces for glazing and wear, look at the shaft and taper, and inspect the belt. If the belt is worn, glazed or fraying, replace it now while the cover is off. We build belts for the Commander, Defender and Maverick lines, including the Hunterworks 2021-2026 Can Am Commander belt, which fits the 2021-2026 Commander 1000 (it does not fit the 700).
Basic steps
- Let the machine cool, then remove the clutch cover and belt.
- Remove the primary bolt and washer.
- Thread the puller into the clutch and tighten it down until the back half comes free.
- Service or replace the clutch, then reinstall to spec.
