Why ATV Belts Die in the Mud, Not on the Trail
Most riders assume a CVT belt wears out from hard, fast riding. On a Can-Am Outlander or Renegade, the opposite is usually true. The belts that come apart are the ones that spent their life crawling through a mud hole at 4 mph, dragging a loaded trailer up a slow grade, or inching along behind a slower group.
The reason is simple physics. Below the clutch's full-engagement speed, the primary has not clamped the belt hard enough to lock it into the sheaves. The belt slips against the aluminum faces, and every bit of that slip turns into heat. The belt cannot shed it, the clutch housing cannot vent it fast enough, and the cords inside the belt start to cook.
What Cooking Actually Looks Like
Glazing
A hard, shiny, almost polished surface on the belt sides. A glazed belt cannot grip even when the clutches clamp it correctly, so it slips more, which makes more heat — a loop that only ends one way.
Cord separation
Look for a belt that has gone soft or lumpy in one section, or cords showing through the side. That is a belt that has been overheated and is running on borrowed time.
Cogs breaking out
Chunks missing from the notches on the inside of the belt mean the rubber lost its bond after repeated heat cycles. Once that starts, the belt will let go without much more warning.
The smell
If the machine smells hot and sweet after a mud run, you have already put heat into the belt. Back off, let it idle in neutral for a couple of minutes to move air through the clutch housing, and inspect it when you get home.
Habits That Save Belts
Before you buy anything, fix the technique. Use low range for anything slow, loaded, or steep — low range keeps engine RPM up so the primary is actually clamped instead of slipping. Do not feather the throttle through a hole; get the RPM up and keep it there. After a deep water crossing, drain the clutch housing. Water in there acts like a lubricant on the sheave faces and will smoke a belt in minutes.
And keep the sheaves clean. Belt dust, mud film, and residue on the aluminum reduce grip just like a glazed belt does.
Then Put a Belt In It That Can Take the Abuse
OEM ATV belts are built to a price point and a broad average of how people ride. If you mud, tow, plow, or ride heavy, you are outside that average.

Carry a Spare, Every Time
A belt is the one part that can strand a healthy machine miles from the truck. On an Outlander or Renegade, swapping one on the trail is not a bad job if you have the belt with you — and impossible if you do not. Buy two, run one, and put the other under the seat or in your pack.
