Bigger tires are the first thing most people bolt onto a new Defender, and they are the single change most likely to make an otherwise healthy machine feel worse. Not because the tires are bad. Because a tire is a gear, and nobody thinks of it that way.
A Tire Is a Final Drive Ratio You Can See
Going from a factory tire to a 33 or 34 inch tire increases the rolling circumference. Every revolution of the axle now covers more ground. Functionally, that is identical to installing taller gears — the engine has to make more torque to turn the same distance, and it does so at lower RPM for a given speed.
On top of that you have added rotating mass. A tall, heavy tire is not just weight, it is weight at the far end of a lever arm, and it takes real energy to accelerate. Together these two effects hurt acceleration, hurt top speed, and — the part that costs you money — force the belt to carry more load in a ratio it was not calibrated to hold.
What That Feels Like From the Seat
Soft off the bottom. Slow to respond when you get into the throttle. Sluggish through the midrange. And when you hit a hill or soft ground, the CVT is late to backshift, so instead of dropping into a lower ratio and pulling, the belt just sits there and slips. That slip is heat, and heat is what shortens belt life.
Why the Fix Is Calibration, Not Just Parts
The 2026 Can-Am Defender HD11 came out with a new engine and new clutches compared to earlier Defender models, so carrying over an old assumption from an HD9 or HD10 does not work here. The Can-Am Defender HD11 Dalton Clutch Kit (33-34 in Tire Kit) is a recalibration of CVT components in both clutches, built specifically for 2026-and-newer HD11 Regular and Crew Cab machines running 33-34 inch tires at 0-4000 feet elevation.
It includes a primary spring and three adjustable flyweights, and it is adjustable, so you set it up for your actual tire size and use rather than accepting one fixed calibration. The goal is to control the rate of belt shift — getting the machine into a better RPM zone faster, improving belt grip and throttle response, and backshifting quickly when the vehicle senses load from soft terrain or a climb. Backshifting quickly under load is the whole game for belt survival.
Two Things Worth Knowing Before You Buy
First, the flyweight arms in this kit use a different roller curve profile and mass distribution than stock, so comparing "total grams" against factory weights or another brand tells you nothing. The package is designed to work together.
Second, an honest caveat straight from the fitment notes: 34 inch and larger tires are getting outside the envelope of factory gearing and should really be paired with gear reduction for heavy work use. Plenty of owners run them for trail riding anyway — and as long as you use low range when you should at low speeds, this kit will outperform stock clutching with those tires. If you are already running gear reduction or portals, the standard HD11-1 kit is often the right call instead, depending on your reduction percentage.
One more question we get every fall: what about tracks or a swap back to smaller tires in winter? Track systems are geared down on their own, so treat them like stock or smaller tires. Leaving a big-tire calibration in place with tracks or small tires will give you high cruise RPM and lost speed.
