Tire Diameter Is Gearing
Bolt a taller tire on a Polaris RZR Pro XP or Turbo R and you have not just changed how the machine looks. You have raised the effective final drive ratio. The same driveshaft rotation now covers more ground, which means the engine has to produce more torque at the wheel to do the same job it did before.
Your clutches do not know that happened. The primary was calibrated with a specific flyweight mass and spring rate to hold the engine in its power band with the tires the machine left the factory with. Add diameter and rotating mass and that calibration is now wrong in a predictable direction: the primary shifts out earlier than it should, engine RPM falls below where the power actually is, and the machine feels lazy off the bottom and soft on climbs.
What that feels like from the seat
- Sluggish, doughy launch that was not there on stock tires
- Engine RPM sitting lower than it used to under load
- Having to get further into the throttle to hold a climb or a pull
- Belt heat and belt slip showing up on rides that never used to cause it
That last one is the expensive part. When the primary shifts out too early and the engine drops out of its power band, the belt spends more time at high clamp loads and low RPM. That is where belts glaze, stretch and eventually go away.
Backshift Matters as Much as Upshift
Most riders think about clutching in terms of engagement and top-end RPM. The half that gets ignored is backshift: how quickly the clutches drop back down the ratio when the machine senses load, like the bottom of a hill or a rut you did not see. Sluggish backshift is what causes the belt to slip under a sudden load, and heavy tires make that response slower because there is more rotating mass to overcome.
Calibrate for the Tires You Actually Run
The Dalton Clutch Kit for the 2021-2026 Polaris RZR Turbo/Pro is built to recalibrate the clutches for oversized tires and the way you actually use the machine. It includes new primary and secondary springs plus a set of Dalton Quick Adjust flyweight lever arms, so you are changing both the shift curve and the backshift behavior rather than throwing a single spring at the problem.
The Quick Adjust design is the practical part. You can add or subtract grams to fine tune the calibration without removing the flyweights from the drive clutch, and the included instruction manual gives the setup for different tire sizes and situations. Run 32s in the summer and swap to something else for a different season and you are not starting over.
Why the flyweight itself matters
A flyweight has to pivot freely on its pin at high RPM under load. If it sticks, it pivots the pin in the aluminum clutch housing instead, and you start wearing out a clutch. The weights in this kit use a superior bushing material proven in high horsepower endurance applications, plus a hardened steel thrust washer on each side so the weight moves cleanly and does not grind against the aluminum housing. Better clutch action and less wear on the primary come out of that detail.
Fitment, Including the Exception
This kit fits 2021 through 2026 Polaris RZR Turbo and Pro models, including the 2022-2025 Turbo R, two and four seat. It also fits 2021 and newer XP Turbo and Turbo S machines that use the Pro XP type clutches, and the kit includes a separate setup guide for those non-Pro XP versions. It does not fit the Pro R. A Hunterworks primary washer is highly recommended alongside it, and an overtravel washer is available as an option.
Bigger tires are worth running. They just need the clutching to agree with them.
