The Belt Is the Hardest-Working Part You Never See
Your Can-Am Outlander or Renegade puts every bit of engine torque through one rubber CVT belt. On an ATV that spends its life in mud holes, deep trails, and heavy pulling, that belt lives a brutal life, and it wears out gradually enough that most riders do not notice until performance falls off a cliff, or the belt lets go miles from the truck.
Know the Warning Signs
A tired belt gives plenty of clues before it fails. Catch them early and you avoid both lost performance and a long walk.
Slipping and RPM Flare
If the engine revs but the ATV feels sluggish to accelerate, the belt is slipping instead of transferring power. On a Renegade especially, that lost snap off the bottom is usually the belt, not the motor.
The Burnt-Rubber Smell
A hot, acrid rubber smell after climbing a hill or working through mud means the belt is overheating and glazing. Once the friction faces turn hard and shiny, grip drops and the belt slips even more.
Rough or Jerky Engagement
A worn, stretched, or narrowed belt rides differently in the clutches, causing hesitation, shuddering, or inconsistent takeoff. If low-speed manners have gotten sloppy, inspect the belt before anything else.
Inspect It Yourself
Pull the clutch cover and look the belt over. Cracks between the cogs, missing chunks, frayed edges, a glossy glazed sheen, or a width worn below spec all mean it is time. Wipe the sheave faces clean while you are in there so a new belt starts on fresh surfaces.
Replace It With a Belt Built to Work
When it is time, the Hunterworks CVT Drive Belt for the Can-Am Outlander and Renegade is made in the USA and engineered for the toughness these ATVs demand. It fits 2009-2024 Can-Am Outlander and Renegade 500, 570, 650, 800, 850, and 1000 models (it does not fit 2025 models), so it covers a huge range of the fleet. The proprietary construction is built to resist heat and stretch, giving you consistent grip and dependable belt life whether you are trail riding, mudding, or hauling.
Carry a Spare and Ride Smart
Even the toughest belt appreciates good habits. Ease off the throttle at very low speed instead of slipping the belt, let the clutches cool after hard pulls, and keep the CVT intake clear of mud and debris. Toss your old serviceable belt in the storage box as a trail spare, and your Outlander or Renegade will keep pulling strong for the long haul.
