There is a specific kind of belt slip that confuses a lot of Polaris RZR Turbo and Pro owners. The machine launches clean. It pulls hard through the midrange. Nothing chatters, nothing bogs, nothing smells hot on the trail. Then you get into a long straight, hold it wide open, and right at the top of the pull the RPM flares and the speed stops climbing. Let off, come back into it, and everything feels normal again.
That pattern — slip only at or near top speed, with a healthy machine everywhere else — usually is not a worn belt or a tired secondary spring. It is a geometry problem in the primary clutch.
What Overtravel Actually Means
A CVT primary works by squeezing two sheaves together as the flyweights throw outward. The belt gets pushed up the sheave faces toward the outer edge, which raises the effective drive ratio. Somewhere in that travel the sheaves are supposed to stop closing, and that stopping point is set by a limiting washer stacked behind the clutch on the crankshaft.
If the primary is allowed to close farther than the belt geometry accounts for, the belt gets driven too far up the sheaves. At that point two bad things happen at once. First, part of the belt is no longer sandwiched between the sheave faces at all, so the clamping area that transmits torque shrinks. Second, the top edge of the belt can start touching the inner clutch cover, which adds drag and heat exactly when the belt is under the most load. Owners who have measured it on affected machines have found the belt standing proud of the sheaves by a noticeable amount at full shift, with visible rub marks on the housing to match.
Symptoms Worth Checking For
- RPM flare or speed plateau only at the very top of the pull, never in the midrange
- A polished or scuffed band on the inside of the clutch cover behind the primary
- Glazing on the outer top edge of the belt rather than even wear across the whole face
- Short belt life on a machine that is otherwise clutched sensibly for its tire size
The Fix Is a Washer, Not a Whole Clutch
Because the travel limit is set by a shim, the correction is a shim. The 2020-2026 Polaris RZR Turbo Primary Washer is a precision-ground replacement for the factory limiting washer. It stops the primary from overtraveling, which keeps the belt seated in the sheaves at full shift and keeps it from contacting the cover under the primary clutch.
Fitment matters here and it is narrower than people assume. This washer is for 2020-2026 Polaris RZR Turbo, Turbo S, and Pro models, including the 2020 Pro. It does not work on 2018-2020 regular Turbo models — those use different clutch geometry, so putting this washer in one is not a shortcut, it is a mistake.
While You Have the Clutch Off
The washer solves a travel problem. It does not solve a calibration problem, and these machines leave the factory with clutching that leaves real performance on the table, especially once tire size goes up. If you are already pulling the primary to install the washer, that is the cheapest time to address the whole shift curve with a clutch kit matched to your tires and elevation. Also inspect the belt while it is out. If the top edge is glazed and the rest of the face still looks serviceable, you have confirmed the diagnosis. If the belt is cooked all the way across, replace it — a belt that has already been slipping has lost the cord tension that makes it grip, and it will slip again on a corrected clutch.
Fix the travel first, then tune the shift. In that order, the top of the pull comes back.
